Forgetting your Apple Account or iCloud password can be frustrating, but Apple provides multiple ways to recover access to your account. This guide covers step-by-step instructions and key considerations for successfully recovering your account.
Determine the Issue
Identify what is preventing you from accessing your account:
- Forgotten Apple Account (email address associated with your account): You cannot remember the email address or phone number used to sign in to your Apple Account.
- Forgotten password: You know your Apple Account email, but you cannot remember the password needed to log in.
- Account locked due to security reasons: Apple has temporarily disabled or locked your account after multiple failed login attempts or suspicious activity.
- Two-factor authentication issues: You cannot receive or access the verification code required to complete sign-in, usually because you no longer have access to a trusted device or phone number.
Recovering Your Account
Recover Account using Email, Security Question, or 2FA
If you don’t remember your Apple Account or you have forgotten just your password, the process to recovering you account is pretty much same.
- Go to the Apple’s password recovery page.
- Click “Reset Password”
- Enter your email address or phone number.
- Type the CAPTCHA/security characters.
- The last digits of your trusted phone numbers is displayed on screen. Provide the complete number of any of them, especially the ones you currently have access to.
- Click "Send Code" if you still have access to the phone number you just verified.
- If you don't have access to this number, Click "Can't use this number to verify with;
- A device currently signed in with you account
- Another phone number added to your trusted security phone numbers before you lost access to you account
- Identity Verification
- If you do have access to the phone number you just verified, enter the code sent via SMS or Phone Call.
- If prompted to enter your password, Click "Forgot Password".
- Additional verification might be required. In that case, choose a method to reset your password:
- Email authentication: Apple sends a password reset link to your recovery email.
- Answer security questions: If set up previously. (older accounts)
- Two-factor authentication: If enabled, use a trusted device or phone number to reset.
- Recovery Keys (if enabled).
- Set and confirm a new password.
Identify Verification
- If Apple cannot instantly verify you, choose Start Account Recovery.
- Enter a phone number where Apple can contact you.
- Wait for Apple’s confirmation email/text with the recovery timeline.
- Turn OFF other Apple devices signed into that Apple Account.
- Avoid using the device/browser used to initiate recovery if done on the web.
- Using the account during recovery can cancel the process automatically.
- Going to the Apple’s password recovery page.
- Enter your Apple Account email/phone to see:
- remaining wait time
- next verification step
- whether recovery is complete
Recover Account Using Your Devices
If your account is accessible on any device, you can use it to reset your password:
On iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch:
- Go to Settings
- Tap [Your Name]
- Tap Password & Security
- Tap Change Password.
- Go to Apple menu
- Click System Settings
- Click Apple Account
- Click Password & Security
- Click Change Password.

If all else fails:
- Visit Apple Account Support.

- Have proof of purchase or identification ready if requested.
