AirPods Guide: Solve Audio Issues, Update Firmware and Keeping Them Clean

Table of Contents

AirPods are a marvel of wireless audio, but even the best tech can run into hiccups. Whether it’s connectivity problems, audio glitches, or just keeping them clean, this guide will walk you through everything you need to know—without jargon.

Troubleshooting Connectivity and Audio Issues

Connectivity Issues

If your AirPods aren’t pairing with your iPhone, iPad, or Mac:

  1. Make sure Bluetooth is on.
  2. Place your AirPods back in the case and close the lid for 15–30 seconds.
  3. Open the lid near your device—your AirPods should appear.
  4. If they don’t, press and hold the button on the back of the case until the LED flashes white, then try pairing again.

Audio Issues (Static,  Low Volume, or One AirPod Not Working)

  • Check the battery: Make sure both AirPods and the case are charged.
  • Clean the speakers: Dirt or earwax can block sound (more on cleaning below).
  • Reboot the device: Sometimes your iPhone or Mac needs a fresh connection.
  • Reset AirPods: Press and hold the back button until the LED flashes amber and then white—then reconnect.

Using Spatial Audio and Other Features

Spatial Audio transforms your listening experience by making sound feel like it’s coming from all around you. Here’s how to get the most out of it:

Enable Spatial Audio

  • Go to Settings
  • Go to Bluetooth
  • Tap the i next to your AirPods
  • Toggle Spatial Audio on.
  • Dynamic Head Tracking: Dynamic Head Tracking is a feature that makes audio feel like it’s coming from a fixed point in space, so sounds move naturally as you turn your head. It provides a more immersive experience with movies, TV shows, and supported music. This feature works best with AirPods Pro and AirPods Max, as they have the sensors required to detect head movement and adjust the audio accordingly.
While some apps, like Apple TV and Apple Music, fully support Spatial Audio, others may not.

Other Features

Even if your AirPods are working, mastering their controls and monitoring their battery can make a huge difference in your listening experience. From customizing gestures to locating lost AirPods, here’s everything you need to know to take full control.

Changing AirPod Gestures

You can customize what happens when you double-tap or press-and-hold your AirPods:

  1. Go to Setting
  2. Go to Bluetooth on your iPhone.
  3. Tap the i next to your AirPods.
  4. Select Left or Right AirPod under "Double-Tap on AirPod" or "Press and Hold AirPod."
  5. Choose from actions like;
    • Play/Pause
    • Next Track
    • Previous Track
    • Siri.

Adjusting Volume, Skipping Tracks, and Using Siri

AirPods support convenient gestures and voice commands:

  • Double-tap: Play/Pause or skip tracks (if assigned).
  • Press-and-hold (AirPods Pro): Press and hold the force sensor on the stem of your AirPod Pro to toggle between Noise Cancellation (blocks external sound), Transparency mode (lets outside sound in), or to activate Siri, depending on your settings.
  • Using Siri: Say "Hey Siri" to adjust volume, skip tracks, make calls, or get directions.

Assigning Custom Controls for Each AirPod

Customize left and right AirPods independently to suit your workflow:

  1. Go to Settings
  2. Go to Bluetooth
  3. AirPods
  4. Left/Right AirPod.
  5. Assign different gestures or press-and-hold functions for each earbud.
  6. This allows one AirPod for Siri and the other for media controls, for example.

Checking AirPods Battery Life

Keep track of battery life to avoid interruptions:

  • iPhone/iPad: Open the case near your device or use the Batteries widget.
  • Apple Watch: Swipe up to open Control Center, tap the battery icon, and check AirPods status.
  • Mac: Click the Bluetooth icon in the menu bar and hover over your AirPods.

Using Find My to Locate Lost AirPods

Lost your AirPods? The Find My app gives you precise tools to track them down:

  1. Open the Find My app on your iPhone, iPad, or Mac.
  2. Tap Devices and select your AirPods from the list.
    • View on Map: The app shows the last known location where your AirPods were connected to your device. If they are nearby and online, the map updates in real time.
    • Play a Sound: If your AirPods are within Bluetooth range, tap Play Sound. The AirPods will emit a gradually increasing tone to help you locate them, even if they are in a bag or under furniture. You can also mute one AirPod at a time if only one is missing.
    • Get Directions: If your AirPods are away from your current location, tap Directions in the app. This opens Apple Maps with turn-by-turn navigation to the last known location.
    • Offline AirPods: If your AirPods are out of range or the battery is dead, Find My shows the last connected location and lets you enable notifications to alert you when they are detected again.

Firmware Updates

AirPods automatically update when connected to an iPhone or iPad. But here’s how to ensure you’re running the latest version:

  1. Connect your AirPods to your iPhone.
  2. Go to Settings > General > About > AirPods.
  3. Check the firmware version.
  4. Automatic updates: AirPods update in the background when charging and near your iPhone with internet access.

Tip: If updates don’t appear, try leaving them in the case, plugged in, with the lid open near your iPhone overnight.

Cleaning and Maintenance

A clean pair of AirPods lasts longer and sounds better.

What You’ll Need:

  • Soft, lint-free cloth
  • Cotton swabs
  • Isopropyl alcohol (70% or less)

Steps:

  1. Exterior Cleaning: Wipe the AirPods and case with a slightly damp cloth. Avoid getting liquid in the charging ports.
  2. Speaker Mesh: Gently use a dry cotton swab to remove debris. Avoid poking too hard.
  3. Charging Case: Clean the inside with a soft brush or dry cotton swab.

Ensuring Longevity:

  • Keep AirPods in their case when not in use.
  • Avoid exposure to extreme heat, moisture, or dust.
  • Check for firmware updates periodically.
